Over The Top Proposals

Posted by Sarah Gai, Seattle

Since engagement season is in full swing, we found it only appropriate to highlight some of the most OVER-THE-TOP proposals on the web. Use this as inspiration – or chalk this up as a what-not-to-do – and as always, happy proposing!

For the love of Harry Potter!

Harry Potter

OK, this one isn’t as over-the-top as it is pretty darn creative. Knowing his future bride is a HUGE Harry Potter fan, this clever fella carved out the latest copy of the novel and fastened the engagement ring inside. And of course presented her with an unharmed copy of the book once she said, “yes.”

The writings’ in the sand

Sand Proposal

{source}

A mysterious sand art installation was spotted at Ocean Beach, California, in April. An elaborate pattern contained the words, “Will you marry me Kelly?” After the pictures were posted at the San Francisco 7×7 magazine blog, readers identified the blissful couple, who are well on their way to wedded bliss. I challenge you to top THAT one.

Making the movies jealous

This dude spent quite a bit of time preparing his movie trailer to be shown at a local theatre while he was on a date with his unsuspecting girlfriend. With the help of a filmmaker, and her father’s permission, of course, this guy popped the question as they were surrounded by friends and family, unbeknownst to the newly engaged bride-to-be. Watch her reaction – it’s simply priceless.

OK – I changed my mind. Top THAT one!

Whoops! Ultimate proposal fail

This poor guy. After months and months of planning, Don Walling decides to pop the question to his girlfriend on top of the Brooklyn Bridge. Just as he’s about the present her with the ring, he DROPS it and it falls through the cracks down on the roadway below. Did that stop this modern-day Prince Charming from saving the day? Of course not! The brave man climbed down onto the roadway in heavy traffic to retrieve the ring, which was bent, but reparable. And believe it or not, his girlfriend accepted his offer of marriage.

Flashmob Extraordinaire

Yes, I know. We live in an era where flashmobs seem to be a regular occurrence, but no matter how many times I see this one, this man’s creativity never ceases to amaze me. Watch as his unsuspecting girlfriend sits in the back of their Honda CRV as 60 of their closest friends and family help to pull off one of the greatest proposals that has graced the internet. Bravo. Bravo.

So does this inspire you? Intrigue you? Are you ready to give us a call to help plan YOUR big day? I’ll have my filmmaker on speed dial.

Announcing New Partnership with Reunion Tower in Dallas!

Posted by Kelly Simants

One of our favorite places in Dallas to pop the question at is Reunion Tower.  With incredible views of downtown Dallas and impeccable cuisine from none other than Wolfgang Puck, it’s an amazing setting to surprise your loved one and to create a super romantic proposal story.

I’m thrilled to announce that we’re partnering with Reunion Tower to offer our Proposal Planning services!  Please check out the below offerings that are available and give us a ring if you’d like to find out more about popping the question at Reunion Tower.  Also, the dynamic husband and wife duo, The Mamones, are partnering with Reunion Tower offering their amazing services to be sure that your proposal is perfectly captured (this will score you huge points).  Brittany Kinley from The Bee’s Knees Custom Design is also on board to create fun signage/props for the proposal setting that will also serve as special mementos and also make for great photo opportunities (again, scoring you major points from your soon-to-be fiancé)!

Soooo, dude – what are you waiting for? Let’s get started!

What Phrases Not To Use…

Posted by Meaghan Cody, Dallas

As cliché as it sounds, all girls wait for that moment when their man goes down on one knee and pulls out a ring. There are a few ways that you could mess this up, one being the words that you say. I have come across a few phrases that I don’t think would go over so well with your lady.

1. “Do you wanna?” – First of all that is awful grammar… Second of all, do I WANNA what? Do I WANNA go to Starbucks? Sure! Do I WANNA spend the rest of my life with you? Not if you are asking like that.

2. “How about it?” – Again, how about what? Be clear with what you are asking, that way you come across that you are confident in what you are asking, like spending the rest of your life with someone.

3. “My mom thinks it’s time we made this legal” – Your MOM? I personally would prefer for my future mother-in-law not to be the one to initiate my marriage proposal. Will she also initiate when it is time for us to have children? No thank you!

4. “Do you think we should get married?” – Going back to phrase number 2, be confident in what you are asking. You should know whether or not you want to marry someone before you ask. You either want to spend the rest of your life with them or not…. If you aren’t sure, you have bigger problems and should be seeking other blogs than this one.

5. Nothing at all – Be sure to say something. Even if all you say is “Will you marry me?”, that will be enough.

We can surely help you come up with other fun phrases on how to ask the big question that won’t disappoint! Just CALL US!

Ring Sizes – Where Do You Even Start?!

Posted By: Sarah Gai, Seattle

So. You’re planning on popping the question. You know you want to present the woman of your dreams with a ring that will knock her socks off. You’ve saved the cash. You’ve got a general idea of her style. Now what?

Let’s start at the beginning, my friend. Your first covert mission is to stealthy find a way to figure out your gal’s ring size. Here are three (hopefully!) foolproof tips to get you on your way.

  1. For Captain Obvious: steal a ring.
While she’s away, sneak into her jewelry box and pickpocket a ring she’s not going to miss. Keep in mind: your engagement ring sits on your sweetheart’s left finger, so if your hijacking one that she normally wears on her right, consider stepping down a half-size.
  2. For the Resourceful One: turn to the internet.
Our good friends at Zales have taken the guesswork out of ring sizing with this printable chart. It’s as simple as placing the ring on top of each circle until you find the perfect match. A child could complete this task. Need we say more
  3. For the Craftsman: make an impression.
Now, this may require a bit more skill on your part, but several jewelers have actually recommended making an impression of the ring with a bar of soap. Wet the bar of soap, press the ring firmly into the bar, and save the soap in a plastic sandwich bag. Off you go to present your latest masterpiece to the jeweler, who can determine her ring size from there.

You are now on your way to becoming an engaged man! Keep checking back for more tips when it comes to popping the question.

Engagement Season, It’s Officially Here!

Posted By: Rachael Wyatt, New York

Engagement Season is upon us – yep that is a real thing. Did you know that 1/3 of couples do get engaged from November to February? I love how Hearts On Fire laid out this information that they compiled. Some of these statistics are really worth considering when you are shopping for a ring. It’s likely that if you really want to surprise her, you might have to do some digging to get some of these answers, in terms of what is important to her. We are here to help if you are thinking of proposing to that special girl this Holiday Season.  And remember, like Meaghan said, try to avoid proposing in food – it’s time to start getting creative!  Stay tuned, as we will be giving more tips in the coming weeks regarding Proposals and how Planning For Dudes can help you.

Why You Shouldn’t Propose With Food…

Posted by Meaghan Cody

There are three reasons why I feel you shouldn’t hide your engagement ring in food, and I have explained below….

1. It is GROSS – I personally wouldn’t want to pull my brand new sparkly ring out of a cupcake. I wouldn’t want to have crumbs, sticky icing, and sprinkles stuck to my ring that I am about to show off to just about everyone. Take it from me… Just don’t do it.

2. It could get lost – If you plan on proposing at a restaurant, and you think that maybe you could give it to the chef to put on the plate or in a drink… What happens if there is another proposal going on in the same restaurant and that dude had the same bright idea you did? What happens if the rings get mixed up? You, my friend will not be happy when some other dude’s girlfriend gets your ring that you just spent a ton of time shopping for….

3. She could swallow it – You may think I’m crazy, but it has definitely happened before. A boyfriend stuck the engagement ring in a Wendy’s frosty and his girlfriend swallowed the ring without even knowing it… Their evening ended in a trip to the emergency room and the ring finally arriving the next day, if you know what I mean….

When you are ready to propose just remember to think through the logistics or go ahead and give us a call and we will do it for you!

Shaun + Shannon’s Proposal

Being in NY for a photoshoot, Shaun saw the perfect opportunity to propose to his girlfriend, Shannon. Under the impression that they were going to dinner with some friends down near Brooklyn Bridge Park, Shannon had no idea what was coming. After receiving a text that their friends were running late, Shaun suggested they take a walk in the park to take in the view and take some pictures. Shaun had his friend and fantastic photographer, Sara Kerens, waiting to photograph when Shaun popped the question and then take some portraits of the couple to celebrate the moment. That was followed by a romantic dinner at Pure Food and Wine in Manhattan and a stay at The Wythe Hotel in Brooklyn.

“Rachael from Sweet Pea Events was crucial in helping me plan this special day for my sweet fiancé. Being from half way across the country and trying to plan a proposal in a city that is so big can be a very overwhelming task. Rachael was able to help me with location ideas, develop a realistic timeline for getting to all the spots, and made the dinner experience at Pure Food and Wine so memorable. We arrived at the restaurant to a beautiful set up with personalized details and Shannon’s favorite flowers awaiting on our reserved table. I’m so grateful for Rachael and Sweet Pea Events for all their help in making this the most memorable moment of our lives!”
